Money Saving Reception Ideas

The reception cost is usually the largest percentage of the wedding budget. To save money you have two options – invite fewer guests or don’t have a four-course sit down dinner or full buffet. The time of day that you hold your wedding will impact the type of menu options you have.

General Meal Times:
  • Breakfast 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Brunch 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Lunch 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • High Tea/Snacks 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Dinner/Cocktails 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Hors d’oeuvres 8 p.m. on
  • Dessert 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Here are some money saving reception food options:

Simple Cake and Punch Reception – As long as your event is not during a normal mealtime, like mid morning or mid afternoon, you may offer an elegant cake and punch reception. Be sure to inform guests ahead of time that a full meal will not be served – “Cake and Punch Reception Following Ceremony”.

Tea Reception – Typically tea and coffee are served with a variety of “tea sandwiches”. Scones, tarts and other pastries may be served, as well.

Dessert Reception – Suitable between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. or after an evening wedding. You would serve an assortment of rich desserts along with some beverages. List “Dessert Reception Following Ceremony” on your invites.

Luncheon Reception – Following a late morning ceremony, you might consider this type of reception. Offer various salads and finger sandwiches.
